Created in 1959, this exceptional Coffee Table belongs to the formative years of George Nakashima's studio, when the principles that would define his lifelong philosophy had already reached remarkable maturity. Executed from a single slab of American Black Walnut, the table celebrates the individuality of the tree through its free edges, dramatic grain and naturally occurring void, which Nakashima deliberately chose to preserve rather than conceal.
The natural opening and fissures are stabilized with finely crafted rosewood butterfly keys, illustrating Nakashima's belief that the life of the tree should remain visible. Rather than disguising imperfections, he transformed them into essential elements of the composition, allowing nature and craftsmanship to exist in perfect harmony.
The elegantly turned and subtly tapered legs provide a striking visual lightness, emphasizing the sculptural presence of the solid walnut slab while reflecting the restraint and balance that characterize Nakashima's earliest creations.
An exceptional feature of this table is the survival of its original 1959 order receipt, issued by George Nakashima Woodworker S.A. to its first owner. This rare period document provides outstanding provenance and offers a remarkable insight into the workshop's early production. It records the original specifications of the table, including its English Walnut top, turned legs, and rosewood butterfly keys.
Combining sculptural beauty, historical importance and exceptional provenance, this Coffee Table is a superb example of George Nakashima's early creations and perfectly embodies the philosophy that established him as one of the twentieth century's most influential furniture makers.
