This table is executed in "English Oak", a species that is considerably rarer in George Nakashima's oeuvre than walnut. In "The Soul of a Tree", Nakashima himself notes that English Oak is the species most likely to develop natural "burls", a remarkable characteristic beautifully expressed in the base of this table.
The top is fashioned from a magnificent single English Oak plank, whose grain and natural figure celebrate the inherent beauty and individuality of the tree. The base displays several highly unusual features: both the vertical and horizontal members are offset, whereas Minguren I Side Tables are generally conceived with a centered composition or, more rarely, with only one offset element. This asymmetrical arrangement gives the piece an exceptional sculptural quality while remaining perfectly balanced.
Beyond the rarity of the timber, the table stands out for the originality of its construction and the remarkable harmony between its architectural form and the natural expression of the wood. It is an outstanding example of George Nakashima's creations and perfectly embodies his philosophy of allowing each tree to reveal its own unique character.
A copy of the original workshop drawing accompanies the table, further strengthening its historical significance, authenticity and provenance.
