Most of Aalto’s designs were created as part of a broader architectural project, firstly intended for a specific use in a specific place. This table lamp was designed in 1955 when Aalto was commissionned to build a private house near Paris for influential French art dealer Louis Carré.

While embracing the trend of functionnalism, Aalto added his own perspective with a more organic approach. In this design, he chose curved and oblique lines as well as an asymmetrical base to convey a lyrical feel to a primarly functional object.
