This exceptional “Recurva” chair was designed by Joaquim Tenreiro around 1949 with solid and laminated rosewood and natural straw. In his work, Tenreiro always favored the use of tropical hardwoods and materials that could adapt to the exotic temperatures of Brazil.
When developing his own line of design, his aim was to introduce lighter construction methods and shapes into the local culture of Brazilian furniture.
He also insisted on optimizing comfort and paid a particular attention to the dimensions and the anatomical proportions of his designs. “Comfort does not come from velvet upholstery; it comes from the way the wood is worked. There is a dimension to the seat that corresponds anatomically to the legs, a back that corresponds to one’s back. It doesn’t matter whether it’s luxurious.”
