This garden set was created for the villa Mairea in Noormakku, in the Finnish countryside, built in 1939 by Alvar Aalto for his friends Harry and Maire Gullischen, one of the co-founders of Artek.
Aalto was given a free card for the construction of this house in the forest and made a conscious attempt to connect the architecture and the landscape. The garden furniture was conceived as a link between the interior and exterior of the house. Aalto used organic forms for this table and set of four chairs, creating a “soft” modernism. The shape of the tabletop that evokes a sunflower testifying of the influence of nature on Aalto’s design.
