This Conoid dining table, crafted in 1971, exemplifies George Nakashima’s approach to material integrity and structural clarity. The tabletop is made from a single slab of American black walnut, selected for its grain, figure, and natural edge profile. The asymmetrical, live-edge outline and butterfly joints in rosewood reveal Nakashima’s reverence for the natural imperfections of wood and the traditional techniques used to honor and stabilize it. The base features his signature angled trestle legs, offering both balance and minimal interference with seating. Designed and executed at his New Hope studio, this piece merges architectural rigor with organic form. A hallmark of Nakashima’s philosophy of woodworking as a spiritual practice.
