From Shigaraki, a most important ceramic center in Japas, Sawa makes powerful works. Old Iga ware, which is known as Ko-Iga, generally reflects wabi-sabi aesthetics with a rustic appearance and purposefully deformed shapes. The mizusashi called "Broken Pouch" (破袋, yabure-bukuro) has been registered as an Important Cultural Property. Like the famous Iga ware ripped and torn mizusashi from the 16th century, Sawa jar shares the same unbridled energy. The firing is classic Shigaraki, Sawa uses very rough clay and adds more motion and texture with incised comb markings.
